Jiří Štěpnička, prominent Czech actor and dubbing artist, dies at 79
Czech actor and voice dubber Jiří Štěpnička has died at the age of 79. A long-time member of the National Theatre since 1975, he was a prominent figure in Czech film, television, and theater, winning the Thálie Award in 2010.
He was widely recognized as the “Czech voice of Harrison Ford,” having provided the Czech dubbing for numerous Hollywood stars including Michael Douglas and Mel Gibson. His career spanned decades of versatile performances across stage and screen.
Štěpnička’s personal life was marked by significant historical hardship. His mother, the famous actress Jiřina Štěpničková, was imprisoned by the communist regime following a failed attempt to emigrate in 1951. He spent part of his childhood in a reformatory during this period.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jana, who died in 2022 after nearly 60 years of marriage. A public farewell ceremony is scheduled to take place at the National Theatre on October 20.
