Jiangsu universities implement digital yuan for salary payments
Several universities in Jiangsu province, including Yangzhou University, Nantong University, and Jiangsu Normal University, have announced they will begin paying staff salaries via digital yuan (e-CNY) wallets starting in November. This transition follows arrangements by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Finance.
Proponents highlight increased efficiency, noting that digital yuan allows for real-time transfers directly from the banking side to individual wallets, bypassing traditional multi-step banking chains. The system also aims to improve financial management by ensuring funds are used for their intended purposes and streamlining auditing processes. Users can transfer funds back to traditional bank cards free of charge, and the digital currency can be integrated with existing payment platforms like WeChat and Alipay.
However, some experts have raised concerns regarding increased state surveillance. Analysts suggest that the centralized nature of the digital yuan allows authorities to track the flow of funds in real time. Critics argue this could facilitate tighter control over individual spending and make it more difficult to move capital through unofficial channels, such as underground banks or overseas investments. The selection of universities for this pilot is viewed by some as a strategic move to implement the system within a highly manageable institutional group.
