Jiangyin police prevent elderly man from falling victim to impersonation scam
Police in Jiangyin, China, intervened to prevent a 70-year-old man named Chen from falling victim to a sophisticated telecommunications fraud scheme. The incident was flagged by authorities after monitoring systems detected Chen engaging in prolonged conversations with a suspicious phone number.
The scammers gained Chen's trust by posing as law enforcement officers and demonstrating knowledge of his personal details, including his name and ID number. They falsely claimed that a bank account in his name had received 2 million NDT (approximately 7.4 billion VND) linked to criminal activity, threatening him with legal consequences.
To further the deception, the perpetrators instructed Chen to download a fraudulent application and participate in video calls. During these calls, scammers wore police-style uniforms and used professional terminology to simulate a legitimate remote investigation. Police arrived at Chen's home during the night to provide assistance and resolve the situation.
