Jiaozhou Bay Second Undersea Tunnel excavation completed in China

China Railway Construction Corporation Limited has announced the completion of shield excavation for the Jiaozhou Bay Second Undersea Tunnel in Shandong province. The project, which is 17.48 kilometers long, aims to connect the main urban area of Qingdao with the Qingdao West Coast New Area.

The tunnel structure consists of two main tunnels and a central service tunnel, designed for a speed of 80 kilometers per hour. During construction, the shield excavation reached depths of up to 105 meters below the sea surface. The project utilized a combination of drilling, blasting, and shield excavation methods.

Engineers implemented a new excavation material removal system and an innovative anti-vibration technology for the shield body to enhance stability. Once completed, the tunnel will integrate with existing transport networks, including the first Jiaozhou Bay tunnel and the Jiaozhou Bay Cross-sea Bridge, to create a multi-level transportation network in Qingdao.
