JICA and Intrant partner to improve Santo Domingo mobility

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is collaborating with the Dominican Republic’s National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) to improve urban mobility and infrastructure in Greater Santo Domingo.

A three-year technical cooperation project launched in 2025 focuses on implementing Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). This initiative includes creating a master plan to use technology and information for better traffic management, developing data dashboards to analyze congestion, and training technical personnel. The project also emphasizes universal design to ensure transport accessibility for elderly citizens and people with disabilities.

Additionally, JICA is conducting studies on bridge infrastructure. These efforts involve evaluating existing structures—some of which are in critical condition—to plan for maintenance, reinforcement, and seismic resistance. The cooperation also includes basic studies for the construction of new bridges to improve traffic flow and capacity within the capital region.
