Jigawa building collapse kills two children following heavy rain
Heavy rainfall in the Hadejia Senatorial District of Jigawa State has caused significant destruction, resulting in the deaths of two children, aged five and eight. The children were sleeping inside a building in the Gandun Sarki community within the Malam Madori Local Government Area when it collapsed following a downpour lasting over an hour.
In addition to the fatalities, several people were injured and transported to Hadejia General Hospital for medical treatment. The storm triggered widespread flooding and led to the collapse of more than 20 houses in the community. Many residents have been left displaced, with some appealing to the Jigawa State Government for urgent assistance after their homes were completely destroyed.
Community leader Malam Jamilu Bulama stated that efforts are underway to compile a list of all affected residents to assess the extent of the damage and facilitate aid. While residents noted that drainage systems constructed by the state government last year helped mitigate some impact, the incident has prompted renewed calls for improved flood protection and emergency support during the rainy season.
