Jigawa State boat capsizes, killing four teenage girls

Four teenage girls died after a boat carrying eight passengers capsized at Dudduru Pond in the Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria, on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 16:00 local time while the vessel was traveling from Kwadige Village toward Chai Chai Sabuwa Market. The victims, identified as Hasiya Mu’azu (13), Hauwa Lawan (13), Fatima Lawan (12), and Dawsiyya Lawan (13), were recovered from the water and buried according to Islamic rites.

Preliminary findings from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) suggest that strong winds may have caused the accident. The four remaining occupants were rescued by local farmers and residents from the nearby Kwadige and Kuna villages. This event marks the second fatal passenger vessel incident in Jigawa State in just over two months, following a July accident in the Ringim Local Government Area that resulted in multiple deaths.
