Jigawa State, Nigeria arrests nine after deadly market violence

Nine people were arrested by the Jigawa State Police following deadly unrest at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area. The violence erupted after a soldier allegedly stabbed 25‑year‑old Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim, whose death sparked attacks on a nearby police station, the use of bows and arrows against officers, and the burning of two thatched shops. The disturbance also led to an assault on vigilante members, leaving one dead and another injured.

Police Public Relations Officer Shi'isu Adam said two suspects were detained on 26 July 2026, and six more were arrested on 2 August 2026 in connection with the market attack and the vigilante assault. The police also recovered six cows abandoned during the chaos. The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation to identify all participants in the incident.
