Jigawa State unveils technology-driven agricultural transformation strategy

Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi has unveiled a strategy to transform the state's agricultural sector into a technology-driven and commercially viable industry. Speaking at the launch of the Nigeria AgriConnect initiative in Ibadan, Namadi detailed how the administration is implementing its ‘12-Point Agenda for Greater Jigawa’ through institutional reforms and increased investment.

To boost productivity, the state has established the Agricultural Transformation Agency and the Ministry of Livestock Development. Key infrastructure developments include the creation of 60 mechanization centers equipped with 400 tractors and 60 combine harvesters. Additionally, the number of agricultural extension agents has been increased to nearly 2,000, and mobile veterinary services are being extended across all 287 wards.

As a major producer of rice, wheat, and sesame, Jigawa is also focusing on expanding irrigation and dry-season farming. The governor highlighted a partnership for an agribusiness incubation program aimed at developing 10,000 entrepreneurs and supporting the emergence of at least 500 new small and medium-sized enterprises.
