Jijel housing reconstruction: Agreement signed for 627 fire-damaged homes

An agreement has been signed to finance the reconstruction of 627 homes damaged by fires in the Jijel province of Algeria during late August. The convention was established between eight branches of the Office of Promotion and Real Estate Management (OPGI) and the National Housing Bank (BNH).

Following instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the initiative aims to provide comprehensive support for affected families. Mohamed Merjani, Director General of Housing at the Ministry of Habitat, stated that the plan covers various levels of damage: homes in ‘green’ or ‘orange’ zones will undergo rehabilitation, while those in ‘red’ zones will be completely demolished and rebuilt.

To assist families during the construction period, each household will receive 400,000 dinars (40 centimes) to cover temporary rental costs. The reconstruction will be managed either directly by the OPGI or through contracted construction firms, with officials emphasizing that new buildings must respect the specific architectural characteristics of the region.
