Jill Scott discusses $19M lawsuit from former label

Singer Jill Scott recently shared details regarding her legal battle to leave her former label, Hidden Beach Recordings, during an appearance on Scott Evans’ podcast, ‘House Guest’. Scott revealed that the label sued her for $19 million in 2010 after she sought to end her contractual obligations.

Scott described the lawsuit amount as grossly inflated, noting that the label had earned approximately $19 million from her projects. She also alleged that the label engaged in a “smear campaign” and made promotional demands she found unreasonable, such as singing “Happy Birthday” to a music executive’s relative to secure radio support.

Following a countersuit by Scott, the two parties reached a confidential settlement in 2011. Since gaining her independence, she has released music through her own imprint, Blues Babe Records, including her latest project, ‘To Whom This May Concern’.
