Jim Cramer sells Bitcoin amid concerns over quantum computing threat
CNBC Mad Money host Jim Cramer has begun selling his Bitcoin holdings, citing concerns over the potential for quantum computing to compromise the cryptocurrency’s cryptographic security. This decision follows a discussion with IBM CEO Arvind Krishna regarding the advancements and risks associated with quantum technology.
The so-called ‘quantum threat’ refers to the possibility that future, highly powerful quantum computers could crack the encryption that currently secures Bitcoin. While current quantum computers lack the power to pose a real threat, researchers at Alphabet have suggested that a significant portion of existing Bitcoin could be vulnerable if technological progress continues at its current pace.
Some experts argue the threat is overblown and potentially decades away, suggesting that the blockchain developer community will have sufficient time to implement post-quantum cryptography to protect the network before such machines become a reality.
