Jim Furyk announces Ryder Cup qualification overhaul
United States Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk has announced plans to overhaul the qualification system for the 2027 contest at Adare Manor. Furyk indicated that a “big change” is coming to ensure the strongest possible group of automatic qualifiers is selected.
The proposed changes aim to address issues with the current system, which relies heavily on official money earned. Furyk noted that the landscape of professional golf has shifted significantly, with massive disparities in purses between Signature Events and regular tournaments. He suggested that a points-based system might be implemented to better reflect recent form rather than just financial earnings.
Furyk cited his own experience during the 2011 Presidents Cup, where he qualified based on 2010 successes despite being out of form during the selection year. The captain intends to finalize and announce the new system following the conclusion of the PGA Tour playoffs at the end of the month.
