Jim Jones regrets passing on signing Drake and J. Cole

Rapper Jim Jones recently reflected on missed professional opportunities with superstars Drake and J. Cole, admitting, “Damn, I f*cked that bag up.”

Speaking on the program Mornings With Mero, Jones explained that he passed on Drake early in his career because the Toronto rapper’s background as a Degrassi actor and his Canadian roots did not align with Jones’s marketing vision at the time. Jones noted that while he recognized Drake’s talent, he struggled to reconcile the artist's image with his own persona. He later realized the error after hearing Drake collaborate with Lil Wayne.

Jones also recounted passing on J. Cole during his time signed to Sony. He recalled that Cole used to record at his studio, but Jones ultimately declined to sign him because he felt Cole “sounded like Drake” and “looked like Drake.” Both artists have since achieved massive global success, leaving Jones to view the decisions as significant lost financial opportunities.
