Jim Thornton suspended from Wheel of Fortune amid investigation

Sony Pictures Television has suspended Jim Thornton, the longtime announcer for ‘Wheel of Fortune’, pending an internal investigation into unspecified allegations. The studio confirmed it is temporarily recasting the role while the review is conducted.

The suspension reportedly stems from an incident on May 14, 2026, involving American Airlines Flight 1276. According to reports, a passenger filed a complaint with a flight attendant regarding Thornton during the flight. As a result, law enforcement met the aircraft upon its arrival at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Thornton’s legal representative stated that the announcer “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime.” The lawyer noted that law enforcement questioned Thornton for a brief period before determining no wrongdoing had occurred and releasing him.

Thornton has served as the voice of ‘Wheel of Fortune’ since 2011. Producers are reportedly working to re-edit upcoming episodes to accommodate the temporary replacement before the new season premieres.
