Jimmer Fredette announces return to professional basketball

Jimmer Fredette is returning to professional basketball after announcing his comeback from retirement. The 37-year-old former NBA guard and BYU star will step down from his role as the managing director of USA Basketball’s men’s 3x3 program to resume playing.

Fredette has been added to Team Miami for the remainder of the 2026 FIBA 3x3 Men’s Pro Circuit, which begins this weekend in Phoenix. His return follows a retirement announced in April 2025. Fredette noted that while he initially felt at peace with his decision to retire, he realized over the last few months that he still has the ability to compete.

While Fredette did not explicitly declare a goal to compete in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, he acknowledged a sense of ‘unfinished business’ following the U.S. team’s seventh-place finish at the Paris Olympics, where an injury prevented him from playing a full role. He stated his immediate focus is to participate in upcoming tournaments to assess his form.
