Jindal Steel sets Guinness World Record with longest steel slag road
Jindal Steel Limited, in collaboration with the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), has achieved a Guinness World Record for constructing the longest road built exclusively with processed steel slag aggregates. Located in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, the 1.85-km, four-lane divided road utilized approximately 200,000 tonnes of processed steel slag.
The project employs a circular economy approach by converting industrial by-products into engineered road aggregates through processes such as controlled ageing, stabilization, and crushing. This method allowed for a 100% replacement of natural stone aggregates, reducing the need for quarrying. The resulting pavement is approximately 35% thinner than traditional roads and offers estimated construction cost savings of up to 40%.
Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh noted that the technology could provide roads with four times the strength of conventional bitumen roads and significantly extend their lifespan. Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel, emphasized that the achievement demonstrates how science and industry can transform industrial waste into valuable resources for nation-building.
