Jingshan tennis popularity drives rural revitalization in Hubei
In Jingshan, a county-level city in China's Hubei province, tennis has evolved from a rural pastime into a significant driver of local economic growth and rural revitalization. The movement traces back over forty years to individuals like Peng Jufang, who helped build early sand courts in 1986.
Following a city-wide promotion campaign launched in 2008, the sport has become deeply integrated into daily life. Jingshan, which has a population of fewer than 600,000, now boasts 356 regulation tennis courts and more than 100,000 regular practitioners. In the village of Wenfeng alone, there are over 80 courts.
The city has developed a comprehensive model by combining grassroots tennis with sports tourism and establishing a hub for tennis equipment production. Local coach Bao Zhuolun noted that tennis is no longer a luxury but a sport of daily life.
