Jinja Meguri project launches crowdfunding for VR shrine tours
The Jinja Meguri Production Committee, a consortium including ReproMedia, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on CAMPFIRE to expand a digital portal designed to connect people with Shinto shrines via virtual reality.
The project aims to assist individuals who cannot visit shrines in person due to age, illness, disability, or distance. Through the portal, users can explore shrine grounds using 360-degree 3D VR technology on computers or smartphones, learn about shrine history, and make online monetary offerings (osaisen) via Stripe. The system is designed so that funds, minus transaction fees, are sent directly to the shrine's account.
The first participating site is Taiho Shrine in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto. Following 360-degree 3D filming conducted in July 2026, the committee is currently developing the VR experience and testing online payment and amulet application systems. The crowdfunding goal is 1 million yen, with the campaign running until September 14, 2026.
