New York Giants name J.J. McCarthy starting quarterback

The New York Giants have named rookie J.J. McCarthy as the starting quarterback for their upcoming game against the Houston Texans on October 25, 2026. The decision by head coach John Harbaugh follows a recent performance by McCarthy during a fourth-quarter relief appearance against the New Orleans Saints, where he completed 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

McCarthy replaces veteran Jameis Winston, who had been starting in place of the injured Jaxson Dart. Winston held a 2-1-1 record as a starter but struggled in the recent loss to the Saints, recording two interceptions. While McCarthy’s late-game production sparked an offensive reaction, Harbaugh noted the need to evaluate whether a more up-tempo, pass-oriented identity is sustainable compared to a balanced offensive approach.

The team also faces ongoing uncertainty at the running back position following the release of Najee Harris. Speculation has emerged regarding potential trades to bolster the run game, including interest in Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.
