JJ Watt named lead NFL analyst for CBS Sports

CBS Sports has signed JJ Watt to a multi-year agreement, naming him the lead game analyst for the network’s NFL coverage. Watt will join play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and reporter Tracy Wolfson as the primary broadcast team.

This permanent appointment follows the departure of former analyst Tony Romo. Romo was placed on leave and subsequently parted ways with the network after being arrested in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 23 for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Romo pleaded no contest to the charge.

Watt, a former three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, joined CBS in 2023 as a studio analyst. He previously worked on the network’s No. 2 broadcast team alongside Ian Eagle and Evan Washburn before being elevated to the lead crew. As part of this new role, Watt is scheduled to call Super Bowl LXII in Atlanta following the 2027 season.
