J.K. Rowling faces backlash for posting photo of trans woman showing under‑skirt

On July 11, author J.K. Rowling shared on X a photograph of trans commentator Freda Wallace seated in a short skirt and fish‑net stockings, captured from an angle that revealed the area beneath the skirt. In the post she added a caption that mischaracterised Wallace and referenced a 2023 Institute of Economic Affairs debate on trans ideology.

The image sparked criticism from users who questioned why a similar photo of a cis woman would be considered unacceptable, and accused Rowling of double standards. Rowling defended the post, saying the event was public, Wallace chose her attire, and the image was filmed with participants’ knowledge. The controversy also highlighted other figures linked to the debate, including former Economist editor Helen Joyce, activist Peter Tatchell and cultural affairs head Marc Glendening.
