J.K. Rowling defends views in new essay on gender and rights
J.K. Rowling has published a new essay on her website, providing an update to her 2020 statements regarding sex and gender. The author maintains that her political and ideological views have not changed, despite facing what she describes as an “avalanche of death, rape, and torture threats” due to her stance on transgender activism.
Rowling characterizes current transgender activism as “elitist to its core,” arguing that it primarily impacts women with fewer resources while being supported by privileged individuals in academic, political, and cultural institutions. She expressed concern that the movement’s push to treat biological men who identify as women as women in all contexts threatens the rights, privacy, and safety of biological women, particularly in single-sex spaces such as changing rooms, sports, and domestic abuse refuges.
While she explicitly rejected the label of transphobic and stated that transgender people should not face discrimination in housing, employment, or personal safety, she remains committed to her advocacy. Rowling announced she will continue to use her personal wealth to fund legal efforts and initiatives, such as the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, to support women fighting for sex-based rights in court.
