JKR denies Cameron Highlands bypass project caused flash floods

The Public Works Department (JKR) has clarified that recent flash floods and landslides in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, are not linked to the Cameron Highlands Bypass Project. The department stated that the project is currently in the design and assessment stage, and no physical construction has commenced on-site, aside from routine maintenance on existing roads.

Preliminary investigations indicate that flooding occurred at the Mardi campus and public field areas near secondary roads, which are not part of the main road alignment for the bypass project. While a small-scale landslide was reported at Jalan Tengkolok—an area under the contractor's routine maintenance scope—debris clearing has been completed to ensure traffic safety.

The Ministry of Works emphasized that the project remains subject to all necessary technical approvals, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Social Impact Assessments (SIA), to address concerns regarding slope safety, drainage, and geological risks.
