Slovakia regional and municipal elections see incumbents retain power

In the recent combined regional and municipal elections in Slovakia, most incumbents successfully defended their positions. According to unofficial results from the state electoral commission, all eight regional governors were re-elected. The political distribution of these governorships shows the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Robert Fico holding two seats, while liberal and conservative opposition blocks hold four. Two regions are led by independent candidates unaffiliated with major political camps.

In the capital, Bratislava, incumbent Mayor Matúš Vallo secured a decisive victory with 64% of the vote, defeating the government-backed candidate Jozef Ráž. Similarly, Juraj Droba retained his position as the liberal governor of the Bratislava region with 71% of the vote.

At the municipal level, the results were mixed, with many independent candidates winning mayoralties across nearly 3,000 municipalities. While the ruling coalition and opposition maintained significant presence, the high number of independent winners suggests a trend of localized preference over party affiliation. The elections, which involved approximately 4.4 million eligible voters, provide a snapshot of political stability ahead of the next parliamentary elections scheduled for 2027.
