Jānis Dimants, veteran Latvian journalist, dies at 89

Jānis Dimants, a legendary Latvian journalist and long-time editor-in-chief of the news program ‘Panorāma’ at Latvian Television, has passed away at the age of 89.

Dimants spent 40 years at Latvian Television, working from 1962 to 2002. He began his career at the Līvāni district newspaper ‘Uzvaras ceļš’ before moving to Riga. Although he graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Latvia, he dedicated his professional life to journalism.

Throughout his career, he received numerous honors, including the Latvian Television Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, the Order of the Three Stars (IV Class) in 2017, and the ‘Honorary Citizen of Līvāni Municipality’ award in 2021 for his contributions to journalism and local patriotism.
