Jānis Urbanovičs leaves Saskaņas centrs leadership after election losses
Jānis Urbanovičs, a member of the board of the political alliance ‘Saskaņas centrs’, has announced his departure from the party leadership following poor results in the 15th Saeima elections.
Urbanovičs attributed the election outcome to widespread apathy within the party and a failure to motivate members before the campaign. He noted that the party's brand, which once helped elevate members, has now become a hindrance. He suggested that the political force requires new leadership and indicated that those who grew within the party might need to consider starting new projects from a ‘blank slate.’
The election results, with approximately 99% of votes counted, show the ‘Apvienotais saraksts’ (AS) as the winner with 42 mandates. Urbanovičs also expressed concern over low voter turnout, stating that half of the voters staying home is ‘very bad news for Latvia.’
