Writer Joachim Lottmann dies at age 70

German writer and journalist Joachim Lottmann has died at the age of 70 following a serious illness. He passed away on a Sunday while in a hospice in Vienna.

Lottmann, often described as a leading figure or ‘elder statesman’ of German pop literature, had publicly shared his battle with cancer. Since early 2026, he documented his declining health and experiences in an online diary titled ‘Langweiliges Tagebuch’ (Boring Diary).

Born in Hamburg in 1956, Lottmann rose to prominence with his 1987 debut novel ‘Mai, Juni, Juli’. The work, which centered on a writer in the orbit of the avant-garde magazine Spex, is credited with helping define the pop literature movement of the 1990s. His body of work included titles such as ‘Deutsche Einheit’, ‘Die Jugend von heute’, and ‘Alles Lüge’.
