Joan Gaspart criticizes Lionel Messi over Barcelona farewell

Former FC Barcelona president Joan Gaspart has issued sharp criticisms toward Lionel Messi regarding the player's delayed official farewell at Camp Nou. Speaking on the ‘Sólo para Culés TV’ podcast, Gaspart emphasized that the club remains larger than any individual player, stating, “The Barça is above his person. He should be careful.”

Gaspart, who presided over the club from 2000 to 2003 and was in office when Messi joined the academy at age 13, expressed frustration over reports that Messi might be conditioning his return for a farewell match on the departure of current club president Joan Laporta. Gaspart argued that the tribute should occur regardless of who holds the presidency, warning that he would not attend a ceremony if it were contingent on Laporta's exit.

While acknowledging Messi as “undisputedly the best in the world,” Gaspart noted that the player's success was significantly aided by his development at Barcelona. The former official urged Messi to set aside personal grievances with the current administration to properly honor the fans.
