Joan Manuel Serrat honored in Algeciras and celebrated at Casa Maxi in León

Spanish singer‑songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat, recent recipient of the Leteo Literature Prize, visited the historic Casa Maxi tavern in Vegarienza, León. He dined on the local dish llosco, reportedly leaving his plate spotless and taking home packed lunches for a week. The visit is commemorated with a large photograph of Serrat displayed on the tavern’s staircase.

Algeciras resident Javier Ortega is leading a campaign to award Serrat the city’s Gold Medal for the cultural impact of his song “Mediterráneo,” which mentions Algeciras. Ortega has secured video endorsements from Spanish cultural figures and is working with the Algeciras City Council, which requires a three‑quarter council vote to approve the honor. He also proposes a parallel recognition from Istanbul to foster intercultural friendship across the Mediterranean.
