Joan Miró exhibition opens at Les Abattoirs in Toulouse

Les Abattoirs Musée – FRAC Occitanie in Toulouse is hosting its first major exhibition dedicated to Joan Miró, running from October 3, 2026, to March 7, 2027. The exhibition, titled ‘Protestation’, features nearly two hundred works that highlight the artist's use of creative rebellion as a driving force.

Curated by Carles Guerra and Lauriane Gricourt, the chronological journey explores Miró's evolution from his early works to his more radical attempts to ‘assassinate’ traditional painting through the use of raw canvases, sandpaper, and impoverished materials. The collection includes works from the Barcelona Series (1939–1944) and pieces from the 1970s, reflecting his response to the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship.

The exhibition also showcases Miró's collaborative spirit, featuring connections with artists such as Josep Royo, filmmaker Pere Portabella, and the theater troupe La Claca. It includes rarely seen works in France, presenting a portrait of an artist who remained deeply engaged with the political and social realities of his era.
