London trial begins for woman accused of killing banker partner

A trial has commenced at London's Old Bailey against Joanna Cierpka, 51, who is accused of murdering her partner, 52-year-old Danish banker Henrik Slotsaa. The prosecution alleges that Cierpka stabbed Mr. Slotsaa 14 times at their home in Elephant and Castle before leaving his body to decompose in a bedroom for approximately nine days.

Mr. Slotsaa, an employee at Citibank in Canary Wharf, had reportedly told Cierpka he had met another woman at work. The crime was discovered on March 15 after police entered the apartment following concerns about Cierpka's welfare. Upon entry, officers found Cierpka attempting to harm herself and discovered the partially decomposed body of Mr. Slotsaa.

While Cierpka has pleaded guilty to manslaughter citing diminished responsibility due to her mental state and recent redundancy, the prosecution is pursuing a charge of premeditated murder. Prosecutors noted that Mr. Slotsaa's wounds included defensive injuries and evidence of an attempt at dismemberment. The court is currently weighing whether Cierpka's mental health at the time of the incident warrants the lesser charge of manslaughter.
