Joanna Whaley Wins Democratic Primary for Michigan House District 2

Democratic candidate Joanna Whaley secured the primary victory for Michigan’s 2nd House District, earning 6,484 votes (55.97%) and defeating challenger Frank Liberati, who focused on her transgender identity, and city councilmember Gary Schlack. Whaley’s win positions her to face Republican Ron Kokinda, who captured 74.03% of the Republican primary vote, in the November general election. The district covers the Downriver communities of Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Melvindale and part of Southgate. While Liberati attempted to make the race about Whaley’s gender identity, her campaign emphasized local concerns such as public safety and infrastructure. In the same election cycle, Downriver municipalities approved millage renewals for police, fire and street improvements, indicating voter focus on practical issues over social rhetoric.
