Joanna Wietrzyk forfeits HYROX Beijing win following hygiene controversy

Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk, a world record holder in the HYROX Solo Pro category, won the Pro Women division at the HYROX Beijing competition on September 12, 2026. However, the victory has sparked significant controversy after it was revealed that Wietrzyk experienced a sudden bowel incontinence episode during the race.

Footage and reports indicated that Wietrzyk continued to compete using shared equipment, such as rowing machines, while experiencing the incident. This led to intense debate regarding hygiene and the safety of other participants. HYROX organizers admitted they failed to intervene during the event, noting that while protocols existed for littering or spitting, there were no specific rules for such medical or bodily incidents.

In response, HYROX co-founder Moritz Furste stated, “Hyrox made a mistake by not reacting immediately during the race.” The organization has since implemented new rules and procedures to prevent recurrence and conducted deep cleaning of the National Speed Skating Oval facilities. Following the backlash, Wietrzyk announced on September 18 that she would retroactively withdraw from the race and forfeit her earned points.
