Joanna Wietrzyk apologizes after controversial HYROX race in Beijing

Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has issued a public apology following a controversial incident during a HYROX competition in Beijing. During the event, Wietrzyk experienced an episode of fecal incontinence but chose to continue the race, ultimately finishing first in her category.

The decision to continue caused significant concern regarding hygiene and health, as the indoor competition involves shared equipment such as rowing machines, sleds, and mats. Competitors reported being exposed to contaminated surfaces and equipment. In response to the incident, Wietrzyk announced she would renounce the points and the title earned during the competition.

HYROX co-founder Moritz Fuerste apologized for the organizational error in allowing the athlete to continue and stated that the company will implement new procedures and rule changes to prevent similar occurrences. The incident has also led to reports of sponsorship changes, with Wietrzyk’s clothing line reportedly removed from PUMA’s website.
