JOANNEUM RESEARCH develops dynamic landslide risk models
Researchers are developing new methods to better predict landslides caused by heavy rainfall and saturated soil. The ALaDyn project (Assessment of Landslide Risk in Dynamic Environments) is being led by JOANNEUM RESEARCH in collaboration with the University of Graz and Lugitsch & Partner Ziviltechniker GmbH.
Unlike traditional static hazard maps that only show where landslides are generally possible, the ALaDyn project aims to create dynamic models. These models combine weather forecasts, remote sensing data, and geological information to determine when and where the risk is specifically high. This approach is intended to provide authorities, infrastructure operators, and urban planners with more precise decision-making tools.
The initiative follows significant landslide events in Austria, such as in 2009 and 2023, which caused extensive damage and required millions of euros in emergency measures.
