Joao Cancelo's move to Barcelona pending final talks with Al Hilal

Portugal defender Joao Cancelo, 32, is on holiday in Sardinia while awaiting the completion of a permanent transfer from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal to Barcelona. After his loan at Barcelona ended following Euro 2024, personal terms with the Catalan club have been agreed, but tax‑related paperwork still needs to be resolved. Barcelona expect the deal to be finalised after the start of their pre‑season training camp at St George’s Park, giving them time before the first La Liga match on 23 August against Elche.

In the meantime Cancelo may begin pre‑season with Al Hilal under coach Simone Inzaghi. New Barcelona manager Hansi Flick currently has limited left‑back options, with Alejandro Balde and reserve players covering the position until the transfer is settled.
