João Pedro signs new Chelsea contract and inherits number 9 shirt

Chelsea forward João Pedro has signed a long-term contract extension that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032, with an option for further extension. The 24-year-old Brazilian, who joined from Brighton in 2025, has become a central figure for the club following a season in which he scored 20 goals across all competitions.

As part of a squad reshuffle under manager Xabi Alonso, João Pedro has inherited the number 9 shirt. This move follows the departure of Liam Delap from the starting role; Delap, who scored only two goals last season, has been reassigned the number 12 shirt and is reportedly training separately from the main squad. Chelsea is also reportedly seeking a transfer for Delap, valuing him at approximately £50 million.

Alonso has praised João Pedro’s technical ability and leadership, noting his determination to succeed. The Brazilian forward has expressed motivation to take on the responsibility of the number 9 jersey and break the perceived ‘curse’ associated with the shirt at Chelsea.
