Joaquim Chissano advocates for CPLP cooperation and reflects on peace negotiations

Former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano has called for strengthened cooperation among the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) member states. During a visit to the CPLP headquarters in Lisbon to mark the organization's 30th anniversary, Chissano emphasized the need for increased investment in education, training, and mobility to address regional challenges. He highlighted the Portuguese language as a vital tool for promoting peace, human rights, and economic development.

Addressing the political situation in Guinea-Bissau, Chissano advocated for consensus-building and dialogue to facilitate the country's active participation within the Community.

Reflecting on his political legacy, Chissano also discussed the strategic importance of the Rome General Peace Agreement (AGP) between Frelimo and Renamo. He explained that Rome was chosen as a neutral location to build trust and avoid the fears of arrest or intimidation that existed during the war in Mozambique. He credited the Community of Sant'Egidio for facilitating these negotiations, which eventually allowed for the disarmament of combatants and the formation of joint armed forces.
