Joaquim Chissano reflects on Rome peace accords and Mozambique's stability
On the 34th anniversary of the Rome General Peace Agreement, former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano has shared new insights into the secret diplomacy that ended the country's 16-year conflict. In an interview, Chissano detailed the negotiation routes between Nairobi, Blantyre, and Sant'Egidio, and recounted his direct interactions with the late RENAMO leader, Afonso Dhlakama.
Chissano emphasized that Mozambique's future stability depends on mutual trust, respect for constitutional institutions, and inclusive dialogue. He also addressed current challenges, including the crisis in Cabo Delgado and the importance of preserving historical memory to prevent the manipulation of youth.
In Nampula, the anniversary also marked a moment of political reconciliation for the RENAMO party. The party reported the return of several former members, including Rui Iapala, the former Provincial Head of Mobilization for the Youth League, who rejoined the party following internal resolutions to address previous grievances.
