Joaquim Miranda Sarmento defends 2027 State Budget in Parliament
Portugal's Minister of State and Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, appeared before the Budget, Finance, and Public Administration Commission to begin the general debate on the 2027 State Budget proposal. The government's proposal forecasts economic growth of 2.3% this year and 2.1% in 2027, aiming for balanced accounts this year and a 0.1% surplus in 2027.
During the hearing, Sarmento addressed questions regarding the housing crisis, stating that the government has implemented significant measures over the last two and a half years. He clarified previous comments by noting that while many available instruments have been deployed, the effects of housing policies take time due to the duration required for construction and market entry. He noted that the rental law is currently in parliament.
The budget is expected to pass its general vote between October 27 and 28, with approval likely following an announcement of abstention by the PS party. Detailed assessments will follow, with various ministers scheduled for hearings through early November before the final global vote on November 24.
