Joaquim Távora hospital staff indicted for manslaughter
Four healthcare professionals at the Hospital Comunitário Dr. Lincoln Graça in Joaquim Távora, Paraná, have been indicted for involuntary manslaughter following the death of a 4-year-old boy. The child died on June 10 due to complications from an influenza B infection.
An investigation by the Civil Police identified critical failures in assessment, communication, and monitoring. Key findings include the failure to perform necessary influenza testing and a breakdown in communication between the medical doctor and the nursing staff. Specifically, the police noted that the nursing team did not inform the doctor about a drop in the child's oxygen saturation to 84%, and no medical re-evaluation or transfer to an intensive care unit was conducted.
The indicted individuals include a doctor, a nurse, and two nursing technicians. The case has been forwarded to the Public Ministry of Paraná, which has requested additional investigations to determine whether formal charges will be filed in court.
