Joaquín Cosío critiques influencer casting in Mexican cinema

The Mexican animated film ‘Gungo y los juegos cavernícolas’ is set to premiere on September 3, 2026, highlighting both the creative potential and the economic challenges of the national animation industry.

During promotional events, actor Joaquín Cosío raised concerns regarding the industry trend of casting social media influencers to guarantee box office success. Cosío questioned the artistic value and technical rigor brought by digital content creators compared to professional actors, noting that acting requires a level of discipline that follower counts cannot replace.

Production challenges were also discussed by the cast and crew. Raúl Aldana noted the high costs and the difficulty of securing investors for animated projects. Actress Silvia Navarro, who voices the character Lana, emphasized the resilience required to complete the project after years of development. Cosío maintained that the quality of the Mexican production is capable of competing with international animation.
