Dani McEwen Highlights Post‑Pandemic Interview Dress Code Confusion
Job candidate Dani McEwen, a Baldwin Wallace University student, arrived at an insurance‑company interview in a matching blazer and pants, only to see most staff in T‑shirts and jeans. She said she felt she had “looked like I was trying way too hard.”
Stylist Christina Adamo of Neiman Marcus noted that the past six years have relaxed workplace dress norms, especially as companies shift to hybrid and remote work. While a well‑tailored suit remains advisable for executive, law or finance roles, many employers now appear in hoodies, shorts or casual attire.
Experts advise candidates to research a company’s culture—through its website, social media or employee photos—and to ask recruiters about dress expectations. Confidence in one’s outfit can affect interview performance, McEwen said. Additional stylists, including Samantha Harman, suggest matching the company’s branding language when choosing interview attire.
