Job market faces rise in ghost listings and AI recruitment issues
Recent data indicates significant issues within the modern job market, specifically regarding “ghost jobs” and the impact of artificial intelligence on recruitment. According to Greenhouse, approximately 19% of digital job postings in the second quarter were classified as ghost jobs—listings that receive applications but result in no hiring activity, such as interviews or tests.
Lawmakers are beginning to respond to these practices. New York has passed legislation requiring employers to disclose expected hiring timelines and remove filled positions, while Pennsylvania is considering similar measures. Additionally, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into LinkedIn regarding the authenticity of its job listings.
Recent graduates are also facing unique challenges. A survey by Resume Builder found that 34% of surveyed graduates aged 20 to 28 had a job offer rescinded after acceptance. Furthermore, 68% reported being “ghosted” by employers following interviews. The rise of AI has contributed to a cycle where applicants use AI to generate mass resumes, while recruiters use AI tools that may incorrectly filter out qualified candidates.
