Job market strain: High application volumes overwhelm hiring processes

The current job market is experiencing significant strain for both employers and applicants due to overwhelming application volumes. A hiring manager reported receiving nearly 400 applications for a single associate-level software support role at a small tech company, including highly overqualified candidates such as those with PhDs. The manager described the process of manually reviewing resumes and responding to candidates as ‘literally impossible’ given the scale of interest.

Data from Monster indicates a difficult period for job seekers, with 25% having searched for over a year and 45% searching for at least three months. This high volume often leads to ‘candidate ghosting,’ where employers fail to communicate with applicants. Mike Hudy, Chief Science Officer at Hirevue, suggests that the breakdown in communication is often a result of the gap between the volume of interest and the capacity of hiring teams to respond manually. Experts suggest that AI could potentially be utilized to manage these large pools and improve the candidate experience by ensuring more timely updates.
