McKinsey: 11 million US workers may face job changes by 2035 due to AI

Research from McKinsey & Co. indicates that approximately 11 million US workers, or about 7% of the workforce, may need to change occupations by 2035 due to AI-driven displacement. While AI is expected to create more jobs than it eliminates, the transition will be difficult; six out of seven workers facing these shifts may require significant retraining and face potential income loss. Vulnerable sectors include office and administrative support, retail and sales, and transportation and logistics. Low-income workers are estimated to be eight times more likely to face these transitions than high earners.

Simultaneously, a PwC Global Workforce survey reveals a growing divide in AI adoption. While workplace AI use has increased by 10 percentage points, access to learning and development resources has dropped from 59% to 51%. This has created a ‘two-speed’ workforce: ‘front-runners’ with scarce AI skills are seeing professional benefits and higher confidence, while the ‘engine room’—the majority of the workforce—risks being left behind. Approximately 29% of these highly skilled front-runners report being likely to change employers within the next year.
