Jobseekers targeted by malicious recruitment and interview scams

Jobseekers are facing an increase in sophisticated recruitment scams where hackers use fake interview processes to deploy malicious software. In one reported incident, a candidate was contacted via LinkedIn by a fraudulent recruiter. After participating in a video call, the individual was asked to complete a technical assessment via a Google Sheet document. The document contained malware that allowed hackers to drain £18,000 from the victim's cryptocurrency accounts within hours.

Recruitment platforms LinkedIn and Indeed have issued warnings regarding the rise of these scams. LinkedIn data identifies a ‘Scam Gap’ among Gen Z professionals, noting that while younger workers face the highest exposure to scams at 32%, nearly a third of them admit to ignoring red flags due to the highly competitive and scarce job market.

Experts and platforms advise candidates to verify the legitimacy of companies and job postings and to conduct thorough research before engaging in discussions with recruiters.
