Texas launches federal test flights for electric air taxis

A new federal pilot program has launched in Texas to test the feasibility of electric, hybrid-electric, and autonomous aircraft. The initiative, part of the White House’s Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), allows companies to conduct test flights before final regulations are established.

Three companies—Joby Aviation, Beta, and Wisk—are participating in the initial week of testing. These uncrewed flights will demonstrate potential routes between cities and regional hubs, such as Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The primary goal is to observe how air traffic control systems manage increased flight traffic and to collect data necessary for federal type certification.

Regulators intend to use the data gathered from these flights to develop safety standards for scaling this technology. While the aircraft will not carry passengers during this phase, the program aims to accelerate the path to commercial market entry by providing real-world operational insights.
