Joby Aviation completes 3,199-mile autonomous flight across the U.S
Joby Aviation has completed a significant milestone in autonomous aviation by conducting a 3,199-mile cross-country flight using a modified Cessna Caravan. The flight traveled from Concord, California, to the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
During the journey, the aircraft’s autonomy technology managed every phase of operation, including taxiing, takeoff, navigation, and landing. While a safety pilot remained onboard to meet regulatory requirements, the system operated without any direct manual intervention or control inputs from the pilot throughout the entire mission.
This demonstration highlights the potential for autonomous systems in sectors such as cargo transport, medical logistics, military operations, and disaster response. Joby Aviation intends to adapt this technology to various aircraft types to improve efficiency and connectivity in regional aviation.
